The Essence of Sin
The Essence of Sin
What is the essence of sin?
Robbing God of His Glory
Sin - is anything we think, say or do that goes against God
For the wages/payment of sin( anything we think say or do that goes against God) is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 6:23
But God showed His great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.
Romans 5:8
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave His One and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent His Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through Him.
John 3:16-17
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved,”
Acts of the Apostles 16:31a
Pride - feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements,
“Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.”
Proverbs 16:18
Selfish - lacking consideration for others; concerned chiefly with one's own personal profit or pleasure
God saved you by His grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Ephesians 2:8-9
God's grace through Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. It's given freely when we accept it. God didn't promise us an easy life when we accept His free gift. In fact He tells us life will be hard (“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in Me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.””
John 16:33)!
The struggles with listening, thoughts, actions, and words are real struggles.
Saying the correct words that represent God (“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.”
James 1:19).
Actions that bring God glory and honor learned from His infallible (incapable of making mistakes or being wrong) Word (“So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
1 Corinthians 10:31).
Thoughts - thoughts are internal. We don't usually think about them as being harmful but they are more harmful to ourselves than words spoken by someone else to us.
Thoughts are how we run down the poor pitiful me, I don't have any friends, no one likes me, I'm not as pretty or handsome as this person, I've lost so much no one understands my tragedies, I've done so much wrong no one loves me... You catch the meaning here, right?
That's our selfish sin talking. Selfish because we are thinking about ourselves. Sin because those are not the thoughts we are to dwell on and because its selfish.
The thing is (and it takes a lot of intentional effort and a lot of training and help from God) none of those things, that our minds are capable of thinking, are true.
How do we change that thought process?
By intentionally sitting and studying God's Infallible Word for ourselves and listening to what God has to say about us and trusting His Word with our whole heart, mind and soul.
Then intentionally striving to think on God's things.
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.” Philippians 4:8-9
God never leaves us alone. He is always with us. Ultimately we have to choose to make the change in our thoughts, our actions, our words, our listening. The more we strive to do that the easier it is to overcome the struggles. It's a second by minute by day choice and it takes practice. And yes, we may fall at a times but God is always always there to help us up.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
““I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”
John 14:27
